Mastering 802.1Q VLAN Tagging: Components, Values & Importance
Understand the Ethernet Frame structure, TPID, TCI, and Priority bits. Learn this complex topic live with Saeed Ahmad, the #1 CCNA Tutor in New Jersey and Cisco NetAcad Expert.
What is 802.1Q VLAN Tagging?
In modern enterprise networks, VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) are essential for segmentation, security, and broadcast control. But how do switches identify which VLAN a frame belongs to when it travels across a trunk link? The answer is IEEE 802.1Q Tagging.
As a Cisco NetAcad Expert Instructor with 20 years of experience, I teach my students in New Jersey that understanding the bit-level structure of the 802.1Q tag is crucial for troubleshooting and passing the CCNA 200-301 exam.
The 802.1Q Tag Structure (4 Bytes)
When a switch adds an 802.1Q tag, it inserts a 4-byte (32-bit) field into the original Ethernet frame, right after the Source MAC Address and before the EtherType/Length field.
Breakdown of the 4-Byte Tag Components
| Component | Size | Description & Values |
|---|---|---|
| TPID (Tag Protocol Identifier) | 16 bits (2 Bytes) | Identifies the frame as 802.1Q tagged. Value: 0x8100 |
| TCI (Tag Control Information) | 16 bits (2 Bytes) | Contains Priority, DEI, and VLAN ID. |
| ↳ Priority Code Point (PCP) | 3 bits | Used for QoS (Quality of Service). Values 0-7. Defines frame priority (e.g., Voice vs. Data). |
| ↳ DEI (Drop Eligible Indicator) | 1 bit | Formerly CFI. Indicates if the frame can be dropped during congestion. (0=Not Eligible, 1=Eligible). |
| ↳ VLAN ID (VID) | 12 bits | Identifies the VLAN. Range: 0–4095. Usable: 1–4094. 0 & 4095: Reserved. |
Why is 802.1Q Important?
- Inter-Vendor Compatibility: Unlike ISL (Cisco Proprietary), 802.1Q is an open standard used by all vendors (Juniper, HP, Arista).
- Native VLAN Support: Frames on the Native VLAN are sent untagged, ensuring backward compatibility with older devices.
- QoS Integration: The PCP bits allow network engineers to prioritize critical traffic like VoIP and Video Conferencing.
